LONDON -- According to analyst recommendations, *Rio Tinto* , *Shire* , and *Experian* are three of the most fancied shares in the FTSE 100. Are they set to rise further, or has enthusiasm peaked? Let's dig in.

*Rio Tinto
*Despite being so popular with the City, megaminer *Rio Tinto* has had a tough time of it. Concerns about the state of the Chinese economy have hit metal prices hard. This has forced analysts to reduce their profit expectations at Rio. As a result, the shares are down, falling 21% in the last three months.

The fall in metal prices demonstrates how vulnerable earnings are to issues outside Rio's control. In the last 12 months, consensus expectations for earnings per share at the company are down from $8.42 to $5.70.

The shares today trade on a forecast P/E for 2013 of 8.1, with an expected yield of 3.9%.

*Experian
**Experian* is a financial data services company with a global footprint. As a leading supplier of credit check data, the business has enjoyed massive growth from the consumer credit boom. In the last five years, dividends per share have doubled as turnover has increased by about 50%.

Experian has long traded at a premium rating, and today the shares stand at an all-time high.

According to the consensus of broker forecasts, the company will earn 0.84 euros per share in 2013, rising to 0.97 euros the year after. That puts the shares on a 2014 P/E ratio of 19.8, with an expected dividend yield of 2%. Experian is significantly more highly rated by the market than the average FTSE 100 company -- a premium that it has earned.

*Shire
*Pharmaceutical giant *Shire* is one of the youngest companies in the FTSE 100. The shares have had a tough year and are barely ahead of where they stood 12 months ago. However, as one of the most successful blue-chip companies of recent times, Shire has built significant goodwill among the investor community.

Today, the shares stand on 14 times forecast earnings for 2013. Anticipated growth for 2014 pushes the P/E down to 12.4 times. The dividend, which has doubled in the last five years, is forecast to reach $0.20 this year. At today's price, that would translate to a 0.6% yield.

If you believe the company will keep delivering growth, then the shares are attractively priced.

Unchartered Territory Cannot Go On Forever

Via Mark Grant, author of Out of the Box,

*The greatest disconnect in the world today is the underlying economies of the world and the markets; all of the markets. *This river is wide and getting wider given the money that the central banks are pushing downstream. The flood has reached all of the markets, Real Estate, the banks, many corporations, any and all borrowers with our incredibly low interest rates, but it has had little impact on the Main Streets of the planet. *There is, in fact, a bubble of epic proportion.*

*It is not “irrational exuberance” but a quite rational placement of money that must go somewhere because it is not left in the sock drawer.* The creation of money by the Fed, the ECB and Japan’s central bank keeps raising the tide but like all tides when it reverses course if will flow back out from the high water mark which has been created and with an equal force.

The reversal will come from an event or from the moment that the central banks reverse position or from the fall in the demand for goods and services as consumers/investors have less money to buy things. The *one truism that can be counted on is that our current situation will not go on forever as many on Wall Street would have you believe.* The one other long established truth that you can count on is that when this reversal comes that the “whoosh” of people trying to rush through the exit doors will be pronounced and startling.

*Europe has been setting off the warning lights. *Their economies are in trouble, real trouble. Total GDP for the EU-17 is -0.2% while Italy and Spain reported out matching drops of -0.5%. The entire Continent, with the barely escaping exception of Germany, is in recession. Europe, in fact, is now in its sixth straight quarter of recession and it is deepening and not lessening with each passing quarter. Japan teeters on deflation and has also charged into the money creation game and buoyed its equity market but I expect a result no different from Europe. Currency wars are now in play with the Euro and the Yen in a continuing drop against the Dollar.

*America reports out a drop in our deficit and parades around the field in triumph* but it is nothing more than our recent increase in taxes. Raise taxes; more Federal income and what did you think would happen in the short term? Hardly a surprise!

*The world, in the eighteenth century, may have been a stand-alone place but it is not now. *The only reason that all of this central bank money printing has been working is because there is no way to invest off-world. We are stuck with the options that we have and that is it. Conversely to the coordinated efforts of the central banks though is the moment in time when a reversal begins because it will affect everyone in the same manner. Even gold can no longer be counted on as an indicator because the physical demand for gold has prompted a mass sell off by Comex, JP Morgan and several central banks as physical gold must be delivered under contract and more cash is raised. *We are living in an uncharted territory.* Reported by Zero Hedge 5 hours ago.

How to Protect Your Garden from Kids and Dogs

$

The worry of ‘stranger danger’ means more children play in their gardens than outside their front gate. With an increase in sales of play equipment, how can you safeguard you garden whilst allowing your children and pets freedom?

A study has revealed that today’s children play outdoors half as much as their parents did when they were there age. Researchers claim that youngsters are more likely to stay indoors and watch television or play computer games.

The study of 2,000 Mums and Dads revealed the average parent spent ten hours and 26 minutes playing outside during the working week when they were children - double the five hours and 32 minutes children head outdoors today.

Many parents claim they are frightened to allow their children out of sight, preferring to keep them safe in the garden. It is this fear of “stranger danger” which has seen a big increase in sales of play equipment such as trampolines.

However, many parents who are keen gardeners worry about any long term damage to their turf. They have worked hard to maintain general lawn maintenance and don’t want their work undone.

Kennedy’s Turf, based in Salford, advise placing all children’s play equipment on a BS1177 grade material for fall protection.

A suitable product would be play bark. The bark is produced from mixed conifer bark and provides a clean play surface all year round.

Company spokeswoman Emma Scott said: “It is durable and long lasting and easy to use and maintain. It is also free from pests, weeds, pathogens and has not been treated with methyl bromide”.

She added: “It should be noted that in order to give protection to the above BS standard the equipment and the fall protection material must be installed in accordance with BS1177.”

A number of families erect equipment such as slides and swings in their garden but children dragging their feet as they prepare to stop can have a damaging effect.

Patches of dead grass soon appear but Kennedy’s Turf argue it can be seeded up no problem.

Perhaps a more worrying problem is the damage the family dog can do to the garden.

“Dogs are indeed a problem, both from damage in general - dogs running on grass can damage it, behavioural issues such as digging and the like and of course burning from urine,” said Mrs Scott.

She added: “If the grass is really dry, dogs running on it can pull it up and then it dies.”

Female dogs are more of a problem than males because they usually squat and empty their bladders in one spot. The concentrated blast of urine acts as a massive dose of fertilizer in a single area, which causes the dead grass.

The most effective way to counteract the burn is to water the turf as soon as the dog urinates. It is also important to ensure that your pet has enough water in his diet. The more a dog drinks the more diluted his urine will be.

If your pet is digging up your lawn it is normally a behavioural issue. It could be down to boredom, playing or a release of energy. To try and counteract the problem and stop damage to your lawn you need to address the problems.

• Is your dog getting enough exercise?
• Is it having interaction with people?
• Are its chewing needs being met?

It would be ideal to have an area of your garden which the dog is able to dig in but this isn’t always an option. Likewise, to prevent spots from urine burns a concrete yard would be advisable.

If the behaviour continues you could seek help from your local veterinary specialist and in the meantime keep re-seeding the offending areas of turf.

Best books on Haiti

$

0
The novelist chooses the books that best explain a fascinating, baffling, tumultuous country

My first visit to Haiti was in May 1991, four months into the initial term of Haiti's first democratically-elected president, Jean-Bertrand Aristide. At the time, it seemed that Haiti was on the cusp of a new era. "We are learning to live in the world again," as President Aristide said, reflecting on what might be called the miracle of his presidency, coming as it did after the corrupt, brutal reign of the Duvaliers from 1957 to 1986, and the string of military juntas that convulsed the country until Aristide's election in 1990.

It was that tumultuous recent history that had drawn me in, and the suspicion I'd formed that Haiti might be the paradigm –perhaps "boiling point" would be a better term – for the ways in which global power and politics had played out in the latter half of the 20th century. I thought, however, that I'd come too late – that I'd be studying the dynamics of blood politics in retrospect, as an exercise in historical inquiry. A few months after my first visit, Aristide was deposed in a violent coup, and in the years since, power in Haiti – who holds it, how they keep it, and how they use it to their profit – is as raw and ruthless as ever. In one way or another, all of the stories in Brief Encounters with Che Guevara deal with matters of power and profit, usually in what might be called the world's "hot zones"– Haiti, Burma, Colombia, Sierra Leone. But Haiti is the place I return to time and again. What follows is a list of books that have helped me gain some understanding of a place that remains as fascinating and baffling to me as the day I first set foot there.

**1. **Stripping Bare the Body: Politics Violence War by Mark Danner**

The first section of this multi-part book – other sections focus on the Balkans conflicts of the 1990s, and the "war on terror"– is drawn from Danner's award-winning reportage on the chaotic years of 1986 to 1990, when Haitian civil society was trying to gain traction against a well-entrenched complex of reactionary powers. But Danner goes far beyond the events of the moment, and digs deep into Haitian history and culture; these chapters are the best primer on Haiti available, a thoughtful and vivid overview that is as relevant now as it was when first published some 20 years ago.

**2. **Kanaval: Vodou, Politics and Revolution on the Streets of Haiti; photography and oral histories by Leah Gordon; commentary by Don Cosentino, Madison Smartt Bell, Richard Fleming, and others* *

"Haiti," as Leah Gordon writes in the introduction to this extraordinary book, "seems to be on the fault line of history," and it's during Carnival that the ghosts, spirits, devils, and clowns of history and present times erupt from the cracks in all their jokey, obscene, satirical glory. The photographs can, at first look, be unsettling; the oral histories serve to humanise the photos, showing the purpose and even sweetness that underlie many of the images. The essays tease out the simmering historical and cultural roots of Haiti's Carnival tradition.

**3. **Hadriana of All My Dreams by René Depestre**

A delirious, brilliant novel by the Haitian-born Depestre, who should be on every shortlist for the Nobel prize in literature. The story of young, precociously horny Patrick's love for the beautiful Hadriana is a blast of high-octane language, headlong storytelling, and weirdly plausible implausibility. Alas, poor Patrick's chance at love is thwarted by Hadriana's untimely death. Or is it? Depestre's narrative unfolds like an MC Escher-designed hall of mirrors.

**4. **"Lecture On Haiti" by Frederick Douglass, delivered at the World's Fair in Chicago, January 2, 1893**

The text of Douglass's lecture can be found in the useful anthology Haiti: A Slave Revolution, 200 Years After 1804. Despairing that slavery would ever be abolished in the US, Douglass and his family were preparing to relocate to Haiti when word came of Lincoln's signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Douglass decided to remain in the US, and later served as the country's ambassador to Haiti. In its analysis of Haiti's role in world history, of the manipulations of foreign powers and business interests in its internal affairs, and of its future prospects, Douglass's lecture is so prescient that it might have been written last week.

**5. Divine Horsemen by Maya Deren**

An essential book for anyone interested in Haiti. Deren traveled to Haiti in the late 1940s with the intention of studying ritual dances, a project that morphed into a profound investigation into Haitian voodoo, that much-maligned and misunderstood religion that Christians love to hate. Deren's study of the voodoo gods and goddesses, voodoo's rituals, and its pervasive role in Haitian life, is not simply one of the best books on the subject, but one of the most perceptive books ever written on the nature of human experience. Yes, it's that good.

**6. Nan Dòmi: Le Récit d'une Initiation Vodou by Mimerose Beaubrun**

This new and valuable book delves into the "interior" experience of voodoo, as opposed to the usual outsider focus on ritual and cosmology. In telling the story of her own initiation and painstaking education in voodoo, Beaubrun takes us into the mystical dimensions of this ancient religion. Nan dòmi* *(which translates roughly as "second sight" or "lucid dream") is a book crying out for an English translation.

**7. **All Souls' Rising**, **Master of the Crossroads**, and **The Stone That the Builder Refused**, all by Madison Smartt Bell**

OK, I'm cheating here, sneaking in three books as one, but Bell's historical-fiction trilogy of the Haitian revolution needs to be read straight through. As only the great novelists can, Bell makes the story of those distant, tumultuous years come alive in the most essential way – reading it, you feel like you have a vital personal stake in the outcome.

**8. The Rainy Season and **Farewell, Fred Voodoo**, both by **Amy Wilentz**

Yes, I'm cheating again, but these compelling, intensely personal books deserve to be read together. Wilentz's experience in Haiti begins in 1986 with the fall of Baby Doc Duvalier, and continues through the aftermath of the January 2010 earthquake. Brooding, vivid, merciless yet full of mercy, Wilentz's writing is some of the most insightful around.

**9. Sacred Arts of Haitian Vodou, edited by Don Cosentino**

This exhaustive compendium of image and word is well worth the hernias one risks by carrying it around. If I was going to choose one book to serve as a single-volume encyclopedia of Haitian history and culture, this would be it.

**10. Island Possessed by Katherine Dunham**

Founder of a world-renowned eponymous dance troupe, Dunham traveled from the University of Chicago to Haiti in 1936 as a young graduate student in anthropology – like Deren, her chosen field of study was dance – thus beginning a lifelong relationship with the country. Dunham's memoir of her time in Haiti is a model of close observation, scholarship, plain good sense, and refreshing candour about all things human, sex and love among them. An extraordinary book by a truly extraordinary woman. Reported by guardian.co.uk 3 hours ago.

3 Running for 1 Upper Saucon Supervisor Seat

3 Running for 1 Upper Saucon Supervisor Seat Patch Upper Saucon, PA --

Voters will see four candidates listed on the Republican ballot in the Upper Saucon Township supervisor primary—but one of them now says that she is not running.

Doris A. Clegg says she has withdrawn from the race in favor of candidate Gerard Anthony.

Anthony, along with Philip Spaeth and Joe Rizzutto, are vying for one open seat for a six-year term on the board of supervisors.

The winner will replace board vice chairman Jack E. Gilda, Jr. who is not seeking re-election. Gilda's term expires in January 2014.

The primary is Tuesday.

The top vote getter among Anthony, Spaeth and Rizzutto will advance to the general election, which means the race will essentially be decided in the primary barring any write-in campaign by a Democrat in the fall.

Patch sent a questionnaire to each candidate. Each response is posted in its entirety. Click on the name of the candidate to read his questionnaire and answers.

· Gerard Anthony

· Philip Spaeth

· Joe Rizzutto: Declined to participate (Rizzutto did not reply to the League of Women Voters of Lehigh County survey either)

Clegg, who is vice chair of the township's Environmental Advisory Council, wrote in an email to Patch:

I was a candidate for Supervisor in Upper Saucon but have withdrawn in favor of Gerard Anthony.  It made sense for only one of us to be running since we both had similar backgrounds and viewpoints on some of the issues.  Gerard Anthony has been in the township many more years than I have and has invested a good deal of his time volunteering in the township.  I believe he is a very good choice for the supervisor position.   Unfortunately, my withdrawal was not in time to remove my name from the ballot nor the League of Women Voters "Voter Guide".  I hope not to draw  votes away from Gerard Anthony. Get Your Chance To Go Inside Twitter, Google And Other Top Offices

Revolutionary companies like Google are helping make information more accessible, but it seems that for the general public, the doors to those very companies remain closed. Most people know how Twitter works, but how many know how Twitter employees work? A new conference series aims to give people insider access to these innovative companies.

OpenCo, started by entrepreneur and writer John Battelle and marketing executive Brian Monahan, turns the popular conference formula inside-out. Instead of having various industry leaders gather in a hotel ballroom to give canned speeches to a paying audience, participating OpenCo companies (dubbed HostCos) open their offices to the general public in an effort to create a collaborative community of mission-driven companies all operating within a city's ecosystem. Job seekers, industry competitors and curious neighbors can all attend the sessions -- for free -- to witness the ambiance and daily routine of companies like Twitter, Yahoo!, AirBnb and Etsy.

"Think of all of the mission-driven companies trying to change the world for good," Battelle said. "We want to create an open network and open collaboration between them. OpenCo's mission is to create a platform for that community to thrive."

All of the events take place in the participating companies' offices, where CEOs or other executives speak about topics like the mission of the business, its core values and what it means to be a member of the community. HostCos come from a variety of industries -- from technology and media to restaurants and nonprofits. OpenCo is also supported by an advisory council that boasts a wide variety of industry leaders, including Ron Conway from Angel Investors, Morgan Spurlock from Warrior-Poets, and Arianna Huffington, president and editor-in-chief of The Huffington Post.

A successful OpenCo trial run in San Francisco in the fall of 2012 seemed to confirm the conference idea's viability. Hundreds of companies applied to be HostCos, though Battelle and his team had to limit the number to 85 because of resource constraints. More than 2,000 people registered and attended session. Mayor Edwin Lee is already enthusiastic about the 2013 iteration this October, Battelle said.

Building off the successful San Francisco event, the OpenCo team has scheduled conferences this year in London, Detroit, in New York City. There will also be a second run in San Francisco. The New York event takes place from May 22-23, and will feature 133 HostCos -- including Etsy, Foursquare, TED, Mashable and Yahoo. Participants use a "picker application" to select which sessions they would like to attend, with first preference given to those willing to pay for a "Reserved" or "VIP Backstage" pass.

The idea for OpenCo came out of the frustration Battelle and Monahan felt when reflecting on the current state of business conferences, especially those in the tech industry. It was no longer satisfactory to charge attendees to sit in a room for several days, listening to CEOs who hopefully say something interesting, explained Battelle. "That model has been tried and tested for many, many years." And as someone who had created similar events, Battelle saw himself "as much to blame as anyone," he said.

So they decided to shake things up. When looking for the common thread between disruptive companies operating today, Battelle said one cultural characteristic stood out. "The companies that are disrupting all had a rough, loosely shared set of values," he said. "But if you had to put one stake in the ground about those values, it would be open. They are are open to new ideas and open to collaborating. They have open-minded people and big, open architecture. This kind of approach to doing business was changing the world."

Jay Nath, the chief innovation officer for the San Francisco mayor's office, praised the 2012 festival for building cohesion in the startup and technology community, while also connecting those industries to local government. "When I think of OpenCo, it's a celebration of the people building great companies and helping to make a great city," Nath said. "It created another layer of understanding about the different organizations and companies doing innovative work, and the impact of those companies on our economy, our culture, and our society."

But the open, amorphous -- or polymorphic, rather -- structure also means that each session will offer participants something different, and it may be difficult to identify concrete results. Eric Wilhelm, founder of Instructables, an online platform for sharing engineering projects, recalls that their session as a HostCo "had no impact on our business, and I simply ad-libbed and answered questions for an hour." Nevertheless, the relatively small time commitment and convenience made it a cost-effective way to reach potential employees, clients and others in the community, said Christy Canida, a senior manager at Instructables. "Being part of the OpenCo conference was dead easy, and was a pleasant, low-key way to give back to San Francisco and the entrepreneurial community," Canida said.

Battelle said he sees the festival as an important step for the entrepreneurial and business communities, and hopes the success will continue on the East Coast and abroad. "When you get a lot of people excited about innovative companies and connecting people, good things happen," he said. Reported by Huffington Post 2 hours ago.
