Announced updated STS101 development plan featuring a new Phase 3 efficacy trial scheduled to begin enrollment mid-2021 with topline results expected in second half of 2022Closed $80 million private placement of common stock financing with new and existing investors

Cash runway into second half of 2023 and through readout of Phase 3 clinical trials and potential NDA filing by end of 2022

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif., March 25, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Satsuma Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (Nasdaq: STSA), a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company developing STS101, a novel therapeutic product candidate for the acute treatment of migraine, today reported financial results for the quarter and full year ended December 31, 2020 and summarized recent business highlights.

“Having significantly strengthened our balance sheet with the recent completion of a private placement financing, we are well-positioned to execute against our updated STS101 development plan,” stated John Kollins, Satsuma’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “Our team remains steadfast in its commitment to developing STS101 as an important and differentiated acute treatment option for people living with migraines and to initiating a new Phase 3 efficacy trial this summer.”

*Recent Business Highlights*

*$80 Million Private Placement of Common Stock Financing*

· In March 2021, Satsuma closed an $80 million private placement of common stock financing led by Commodore Capital and New Enterprise Associates, L.P. with participation from new and existing investors including RA Capital Management, Vivo Capital, Samlyn Capital, Surveyor Capital (a Citadel company), Aspire Capital Fund, funds managed by Ghost Tree Capital Group, LP, Point72 Asset Management and Logos Capital as well as Satsuma co-founder, Shin Nippon Biomedical Laboratories.

· The Company believes the proceeds from this financing, combined with cash, cash equivalents, and marketable securities of $68.2 million at the end of 2020, are sufficient to fund its operations into the second half of 2023 and through key clinical and regulatory milestones, including completion of the STS101 Phase 3 clinical development program in the second half of 2022 and potential filing of a New Drug Application by the end of 2022.*STS101 development plan update*

· In March 2021, Satsuma announced an updated STS101 development plan which includes a new Phase 3 efficacy trial that the Company anticipates initiating in mid-2021, with topline results expected in the second half of 2022. The new Phase 3 trial will take into account our findings from analyses of the EMERGE Phase 3 pivotal trial results.
· In addition, the Company plans to explore dose strengths greater than 5.2 mg, the higher of the two STS101 dose strength evaluated in the EMERGE trial, by conducting a Phase 1 trial to evaluate the pharmacokinetics, safety, and tolerability of STS101 5.2 mg and two higher dose strengths. The Company anticipates completing this Phase 1 trial in the second quarter of 2021 and plans to select the STS101 dose strength to utilize in its next Phase 3 efficacy trial based on its results.

*ASCEND Phase 3 open-label, long-term safety trial*

· In August 2020, Satsuma announced the initiation of patient enrollment in the ASCEND trial, a multi-center, open-label, 12-month study to evaluate the safety and tolerability of STS101 as an acute treatment for migraine.
· In conjunction with its March 2021 STS101 development plan update, the Company reported preliminary results to date from the ASCEND trial.   As of February 23, 2021, the Company had enrolled more than 275 subjects in the ASCEND trial who had treated a total of more than 2,200 migraine attacks with STS101 5.2 mg. To date, STS101 5.2 mg has been generally well-tolerated in the ASCEND trial, with low adverse event rates and no treatment-related serious adverse events reported.

*Upcoming 2021 & 2022 milestones*

· Complete Phase 1 safety and pharmacokinetic study with STS101 5.2 mg and two higher dose strengths in the second quarter of 2021
· Initiate new STS101 Phase 3 efficacy trial in mid-2021
· Report top-line results from new Phase 3 efficacy trial in second half of 2022
· Complete ASCEND Phase 3 open-label safety trial in second half of 2022
· Present further data on STS101, DHE, and the proprietary dry-powder nasal drug delivery technologies incorporated in STS101 at medical meetings in 2021 and 2022
· File STS101 NDA by the end of 2022

*Expansion of Intellectual Property Portfolio *

Satsuma continues to expand its intellectual property portfolio, with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office issuing two U.S. patents relating to STS101 in the fall of 2020. These two new patents, one owned and one exclusively licensed by Satsuma, have estimated expiration dates in 2039 and 2037, respectively, not including any potential adjustments or extensions of term. The issuance of these patents brings the total number of issued U.S. patents exclusively licensed or owned by Satsuma to ten, and in total, Satsuma currently owns or has exclusive license rights under more than sixty U.S. and foreign patents and pending applications. The Company believes that the breadth of its intellectual property portfolio reflects the highly innovative and differentiated nature of the proprietary dry-powder nasal delivery and formulation technologies incorporated in STS101.

*Financial results for the fourth quarter and full year 2020*

Net losses for the fourth quarter and full year 2020 were $12.5 million and $47.6 million, respectively, or $0.72 and $2.73 per common share, respectively. This compared to net losses of $10.8 million and $28.2 million, respectively, or $0.62 and $4.80 per common share, respectively for the same periods in 2019. As of December 31, 2020, the Company had $68.2 million of cash, cash equivalents and marketable securities. Including the recent financing, the Company believes it has sufficient financial resources to fund operations into the second half of 2023.

Research and development expenses were $9.0 million and $36.3 million for the fourth quarter and full year 2020, respectively, compared to $9.2 million and $24.2 million for the same periods of 2019, respectively. Fourth quarter expenses decreased by $0.1 million, primarily due to a decrease in the clinical expenses as the EMERGE study was concluding offset by increases for the ASCEND study and higher payroll and personnel expenses, including salaries, benefits and stock-based compensation expenses.

General and administrative expenses were $3.4 million and $12.1 million for the fourth quarter and full year 2020, respectively, compared to $2.1 million and $4.7 million for the same periods of 2019, respectively. Fourth quarter expenses increased by $1.3 million, primarily due to higher stock-based compensation expense, D&O insurance, legal expenses and other administrative costs.

*About Satsuma Pharmaceuticals and STS101
*Satsuma Pharmaceuticals is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company developing a novel therapeutic product candidate for the acute treatment of migraine. Its product candidate, STS101, is a drug-device combination of a proprietary dry-powder formulation of dihydroergotamine mesylate, or DHE, which is designed to be quickly and easily self-administered with a proprietary pre-filled, single-use, nasal delivery device. DHE products have long been recommended as a first-line therapeutic option for the acute treatment of migraine and have significant advantages over other therapeutics for many patients. However, broad use has been limited by invasive and burdensome administration and/or sub-optimal clinical performance of available injectable and liquid nasal spray products. STS101 is in Phase 3 development and specifically designed to deliver the clinical advantages of DHE while overcoming these shortcomings.

Satsuma is headquartered in South San Francisco, California with operations in both California and Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. For further information, please visit www.satsumarx.com.

NYC Mayor to Set Up COVID Vaccination Site for Theater Workers to Help Broadway Reopen by Fall (Video)

NYC Mayor to Set Up COVID Vaccination Site for Theater Workers to Help Broadway Reopen by Fall (Video) The newest show on Broadway will be a coronavirus vaccine site on the famed street that will be reserved for theater industry workers, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Thursday.

De Blasio said at a news conference the goal is to help theaters on and off Broadway to re-open for performances beginning in the fall.

“New York City never stops, we keep going no matter what, that’s who we are,” de Blasio said.  “The show must go on and it will go on, on Broadway and off Broadway.”

The site will be located on Broadway and in addition, there also will be a mobile vaccination unit to serve theater workers beyond Broadway. De Blasio’s plan also calls for pop-up coronavirus testing sites located near Broadway and off Broadway theaters.

De Blasio opened his news conference by saying New York has a goal of seeing five million people fully vaccinated by June. As of Thursday, he said, New York had surpassed 3.5 million people vaccinated (3,537,937 and counting).

Earlier this month, New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced that arts, entertainment and events venues can reopen April 2 at 33% capacity, with a limit of 100 people indoors or 200 people outdoors. However, Broadway producers have said it is not economically viable for them to open their shows at reduced capacity.

Broadway shows, which grossed $1.83 billion during the 2018-19 season and helped fuel the NYC tourist economy, have been shuttered since March 12, 2020.

L.A.’s live performing arts venues, including downtown’s Music Center, have also suffered closures during the pandemic, including theater performances at the Ahmanson Theatre and Mark Taper Forum, opera at Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and Los Angeles Philharmonic performances at Walt Disney Concert Hall. In May, the Hollywood Bowl was forced to cancel the entire 2020 summer season for the first time in its 98-year history.

Rutgers to require students be vaccinated for virus in fall

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. (AP) — Rutgers University will require that all students be vaccinated for the coronavirus before arriving for classes in the fall, the university said Thursday.

The federal government's assurance of vaccine supply for all Americans prompted Rutgers to make the decision, the university said in a statement.

Brian Strom, chancellor of Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences and executive vice president for health affairs, said the vaccine is the key “to the return of campus instruction and activities closer to what we were accustomed to before the pandemic.”

“The COVID-19 vaccines have proven to be safe and effective in preventing serious illness, hospitalization and death,” Storm said in the statement.

The university said students may request an exemption from vaccination for medical or religious reasons. Students participating in online-only classes will not be required to be vaccinated.

Students enrolling at Rutgers who are under 18 will be advised to receive the Pfizer vaccine because it’s approved for people age 16 and up, the university said.

Faculty and staff are strongly urged to receive a vaccination, a university official said in the statement.

Rutgers said it has received approval from the state of New Jersey to administer vaccines on campus to faculty, staff and students once vaccine supplies are available to the university.

Thank F*ck For 6Music During this awful period it’s been a lifeline…

Last week saw a slew of people online sharing their final memories of the ‘normal world’ – that weird time when the curtain of COVID was falling across the country, but events still managed to go ahead. Photos of birthday parties were shared, including memories of friends and family they haven’t managed to see since. - For music fans, it was all about their final shows – the last time they went to an actual, proper, not sitting down gig.

Me? It was the 6Music festival in Camden last year, an afternoon visit to Dingwalls to catch *Robert Glasper* and a truly wonderful set from *Sudan Archives*.

- - -

- - -

In a way, that’s set the tone for what followed. When the headlines tumbled towards the dystopian, when lockdown (Parts One, Two, and Three) began to bite, 6Music was always there. Of course, every Clash writer spends an inordinate amount of time soaking up new releases, but we also need to actually do some work – and that’s where radio came in.

Come rain or shine, 6Music was there. As familiarity passed, however, one thing became clear: it’s a genuine, bona fide asset to the country, a cultural phenomenon, an international leader. Put simply: it’s a fucking great radio station.

Every morning I wake up to *Chris Hawkins* – the alarm is set to the radio, meaning he’s literally the first thing I hear. The show itself is perfectly judged – it’s eclectic but not obtrusive (I don’t function before 8am, that’s just the way it is) and isn’t afraid to move outside the norm. The other morning I came back through with a cup of coffee, only to hear the first notes of drum ‘n’ bass classic ‘Valley Of The Shadows’. At 7.20 in the morning. On a state broadcaster. Truly, a special thing.

By this stage *Lauren Laverne* is little less than a national institution, a broadcaster whose calm and reassuring voice is at the forefront of what makes 6Music tick. It’s also worth pointing out, though, that she’s basically one of us – a fan, someone who loves being able to geek out and share new music. The changeover into *Mary Anne Hobbs* is perfectly done, too. An experienced, calm voice, Mary Anne’s quiet passion is driven by a real purity – whether she’s revisiting Dubstep Warz (on daytime radio!) or introducing post-rock warlords, her pure, unadulterated love for broadcasting imbues every show with a halo of integrity.

Shaun Keaveny’s personality fires up mid-afternoon, and his hilarious approach to radio adds a completely different dynamic to 6Music. *Steve Lamacq* is a 6Music evergreen, someone who hasn’t so much changed his shoes – DMs, always – in a couple of decades or more. Taking charge of drive-time, though, he’s used it to break, pound for pound, more bands than anyone else in this country. There is a clear correlation between his support and the likes of IDLES, Fontaines D.C., or even dear old Sports Team leaving the underground.

- - -

- - -

In a broader sense – and this is purely anecdotal – there is a clear correlation between 6Music’s support and placements in record shops across the land. It’s a station for music fans, for people who want to support their favourite artists, and the hosts reflect that.

Just look at some of the weekend shows.* Gilles Peterson* revs up Saturday afternoon by playing essentially whatever he likes – from left-field jazz to club cuts, his shows display the rich depth of his DJ sets, while also demonstrating his skills as an interviewee. With the UK jazz communities firing on all cylinders, his show has rarely been so vital, a means for tomorrow’s Mercury nominees to get themselves heard today.

*Craig Charles *on Saturday evenings has become an institution, with his funk and soul juggernaut extending into festival sets, club outings, and actual compilations. It’s worth pointing out, though, that this music doesn’t normally get in-roads into mainstream culture – Saturday nights on 6Music is like a visit to an alternate universe where Northern Soul, rare groove, and jazz-funk crews actually won their respective battles.

In fact, the riches on display are almost too numerous to mention. Marc Riley in the evenings has a peerless track record for supporting new groups. In a neat twist of fate, the bulk of ‘em sound a lot like The Fall – and he actually did time in the trenches with Mark E. Smith.

Whether it’s *Huw Stephens* standing in or *Cerys Matthews *digging into the crates, *Jamz Supernova* leaping onboard or *Radliffe and Maconie* doing whatever the hell they like, the probably isn’t finding a show you like – it’s actually locating the will to turn the damn radio off.

In a year dominated by toxicity, in a time when music fans have been separated from one another, 6Music has truly, truly been a beacon. So the next time #DefundTheBBC starts to trend, we’ll simply tweet back: keep your hands away from 6. It’s a genuine broadcasting success, and we’re lucky to have it.

Big Windows 10 Change as the Taskbar Waves Goodbye to Explorer.exe

Big Windows 10 Change as the Taskbar Waves Goodbye to Explorer.exe Microsoft is working on several big changes for Windows 10 in the long term, and while everybody expects the fall update landing this year to be the one introducing them all, there’s a chance we might have to wait a little bit longer to actually get our hands on everything the company is experimenting with these days. One of the most interesting changes that Microsoft is already working on is giving the Windows 10 taskbar a DLL of its own, essentially separating it from explorer.exe. The change, which was spotted by Twitter user @thebookisclosed, is already live in the latest preview builds of Windows 10, though at this point, it doesn’t seem to be complete. “The taskbar is being moved from Explorer.exe into Taskbar.dll. Surreal to see this get relocated after decades. Right now Explorer still contains the code, but it's possible to switch to the DLL implementation. There's still some odd...

Why Would China Censor Oscars Over a Short Doc Nominee? ‘They Are Obviously Afraid,’ Director Says

Why Would China Censor Oscars Over a Short Doc Nominee? ‘They Are Obviously Afraid,’ Director Says Since premiering at Sundance in January 2020, “Do Not Split” has won praise on the festival circuit for its intense, street-level depiction of the 2019 Hong Kong protests against a harsh extradition law. The 35-minute film (available to stream for free via Field of Vision) was nominated on March 15 for the Best Documentary Short Subject Oscar. That was when Norwegian director Anders Hammer received the best “worst review” of his career.

A March 17 article in China’s state-run Global Times stated that the short film “should not win the award as it lacks artistry and is full of biased political stances.” Citing unnamed Chinese film industry sources, the article continued, “The Oscars should not be reduced to political tools; otherwise, it will hurt Chinese audiences’ feelings and may lead to a heavy loss in the Chinese film market.”

Hammer, 43, grinned during a Zoom conversation with TheWrap from his home in Norway when the topic came up.

“Bad reviews always hurt,” he said sarcastically. “This was the reaction from the Beijing government that we expected. This is what they do. I laughed out loud while reading parts of that, but it’s actually not funny. Because basic democratic human rights are disappearing from Hong Kong due to the politics of Beijing – but also because you can see there is a threat being made through that article. China is clever to remind us that they have the biggest cinema audience in the world.”

Hammer added, “China does not have a reputation for acting democratically when it meets resistance. And they are obviously afraid that large segments of their population could turn against them.”

To be sure, as reported by Bloomberg, China’s government reacted to the nominations quickly, issuing an order instructing media outlets “that Oscars coverage should focus on awards that aren’t seen as controversial.” This potentially could include the cancellation of the live telecast of the awards show in China or the censorship of certain categories from the broadcast, such as Documentary Short Subject.

Or Best Director. The success of Beijing-born “Nomadland” frontrunner Chloé Zhao has received a mixed reception in her home country. Following Zhao’s Golden Globe wins for Best Picture and Best Director, a 2013 interview with Filmmaker Magazine resurfaced in which she referred to China as “a place where there are lies everywhere,” sparking a backlash on Chinese social media. (At present, “Nomadland” is still scheduled to open in the country next month. Zhao’s large-scale Marvel movie, “Eternals,” is slated for the fall.)

Hammer addressed his film’s unique connection to “Nomadland,” which he has not yet seen. “The reaction is similar on a general level, but ‘Nomadland’ is set completely in the U.S. It has nothing to do with China policy. If the Beijing government rearranges plans to release the film in China, it would be a shame. But not unexpected.”

Hammer studied political science and has spent half his life reporting from conflict zones, like Afghanistan and Iraq. Despite his own perspective on the tension between mainland China and the Hong Kong protesters, his goal was to present a film with three different perspectives: the pro-democracy protestors in Hong Kong, the pro-China faction and the police. All three are vividly on view during a near-riot that breaks out at a shopping mall in “Do Not Split.” But the director said he met strong resistance in attempting to access the latter two groups.

“It was impossible to conduct a proper interview with the police,” he said. “Other reporters were laughing at me when I said I wanted to interview the police. So that didn’t happen. And they became more aggressive to foreign reporters after awhile. And the pro-China supporters didn’t trust me or any journalists there. They were calling us corrupted and fake all the time. As a journalist, if you can’t have any access whatsoever to a group, it’s really hard to tell their story.”

And so the film consists largely of the young protestors fighting for democracy in Hong Kong. That the film favors their point of view is a crux of China’s criticism against it. But almost as if to rebut the notion that he’s merely a puppet for celebrating the protesters, Hammer begins “Do Not Split” with a scene of protesters lighting a fire inside a closed bank lobby. The use of force and its efficacy is discussed frankly among protesters in the film.

“I wanted to go as deep psychologically as possible,” Hammer said. “My aim was to get as close to the protesters’ experience. And to see what repeated trauma does to these very young people, most just in their 20s. They are risking their futures. I’m older and I’m a foreigner, so even when I’m moving along with my camera in the street, I don’t have any of the mental and physical pressure on me like these protesters do.”

Though the protests took place the year before COVID-19 swept across the planet, face masks hold a political power, as seen in the film. They were common in Hong Kong during a 2003 SARS breakout, and said Hammer, “the protesters used masks to hide their faces but also to remove any sense of hierarchy or leadership among them. They are one big mass together. The masks were very symbolic.” (Somewhat ironically, given what was right around the corner, China banned face masks in October 2019.)

Hammer stressed that there is one fundamental reason to explain why the China government suppresses coverage of the protests in Hong Kong: fear.

“The government in Beijing is very scared. Very, very scared what the protests in Hong Kong can lead to in mainland China. That’s why the censorship was going on like crazy all the time during the protests. That’s why they reacted this way to our film being nominated for an Oscar. It’s not a surprise at all.”

He smiled while pointing out how the Chinese government’s freakout over his film has a tremendous potential to backfire. “They are certainly helping to promote the movie and to bring more attention to the cause for human rights in Hong Kong. So I probably should thank them.”

He added, “Unfortunately they don’t like to communicate directly.”

Ron Paul: Second Amendment In The Firing Line – OpEd

Ron Paul: Second Amendment In The Firing Line – OpEd Gun control was already a Biden Administration priority before the recent shootings in Georgia, Colorado, and Virginia. In fact, the House of Representatives passed two gun-control bills weeks before the shootings.

One of the House-passed bills expands background checks to include private sales, including those made at gun shows. Under this bill, someone who is not a licensed federal firearms dealer cannot sell a firearm without first relinquishing it to a federally-licensed dealer. The dealer must then conduct a background check on the prospective purchaser.

The second bill allows the federal government to indefinitely delay a background check, thus indefinitely delaying a gun purchase. Other legislation introduced in Congress would create a national firearms registry, which would only facilitate gun confiscation.

This same legislation would forbid anyone under 21 from owning a gun. The ban does not apply to the military, so it will not stop the majority of gun violence committed by 18-21 year-olds.

The bill requires Americans to obtain a federal license before getting a firearm, but individuals cannot receive a license unless they undergo a psychological evaluation. The psychological evaluation mandate could lead to individuals losing their Second Amendment rights because they once suffered from depression. It could also cause people to lose their Second Amendment rights because someone told the police they may become violent.

Police officers in 20 states and the District of Columbia already have the authority to take away an individual’s Second Amendment rights based on allegations and without giving the individual due process. These “Red Flag” laws are supported by politicians of both parties, including some who claim to be pro-gun rights.

For example, former President Trump supported Red Flag laws. President Trump and Congressional Democrats were on the verge of reaching a “bipartisan” deal to expand Red Flag laws in the fall of 2019. Fortunately, the Democrat attempt to impeach the President ended all efforts at “bipartisan” deals to take away our rights.

A psychological evaluation could also be used to deny an individual Second Amendment rights because they may engage in “domestic terrorism.” Among those likely to be considered as potential “domestic terrorists” are opponents of US foreign policy, mass surveillance, the income tax, the Federal Reserve, and – ironically – gun control.

There is also legislation to reinstate the assault-weapons ban. Like the original ban, which was in effect from 1994-2004, the new legislation bans an arbitrary list of firearms and will do little to reduce gun violence.

Criminals and psychotics are not going to be deterred by background checks and licensing requirements from obtaining a firearm. There will be a black market to service those who cannot obtain firearms by legal means.

By discouraging law-abiding Americans from owning firearms, these laws leave millions of Americans defenseless against gun violence. There is a reason why most mass shootings occur in gun-free zones.

If Congress is serious about protecting Americans from violence, it would repeal all federal gun control laws. A good place to start would be with the Brady background check law and the misnamed “Safe and Gun-Free Schools” law, which leaves children defenseless against mass shooters. Congress ending the unconstitutional and anti-liberty war on drugs would also greatly reduce gun violence. Gun control, like all attempts by government to control our lives, makes us less safe, and less free.

"Despite the economic impact of the virus and the challenging rate environment, Trinity Bank remains positioned to increase the cash dividend to shareholders. The current payout ratio (Dividend divided by Net Income) is approximately 30%, and we believe this is sustainable. In spite of the temporary increase in earning assets we have seen as a result of PPP lending activity, Trinity Bank remains well-capitalized, with a capital ratio in excess of 10%. We have experienced good, core loan growth (excluding the SBA PPP loans) and are well-positioned to continue taking advantage of the opportunities presented in the North Texas market."

Homicides Higher In 2020 And COVID Lockdowns Are Likely Cause – OpEd

Homicides Higher In 2020 And COVID Lockdowns Are Likely Cause – OpEd By Ryan McMaken*

Twenty twenty was an unpleasant year for so many reasons. It was a year of riots, unemployment, and the trend in overall rising mortality continued unabated.

Homicides also increased.

In fact, in preliminary homicide data, it looks like homicides increased a lot in 2020.

According to the FBI’s Preliminary Uniform Crime Report for the first half of 2020, “murder and nonnegligent manslaughter offenses increased 14.8%, and aggravated assault offenses were up 4.6%.”

If the second half of 2020 proves to be about the same as the first half, then the nationwide homicide rate for 2020 will have risen from 5 per 100,000 in 2019 to 5.8 per 100,000 in 2020. That’s a big increase, and puts 2020’s total at the highest rate recorded in fifteen years, matching 2006’s rate of 5.8 per 100,000.

Some other data, however, suggests the year-end numbers for 2020 will be even worse than that. Homicides look to be up more than 20 percent during the fall of 2020 compared to the previous year. Thus, the increase from 2019 to 2020 may prove to be one of the largest increases in homicide in more than fifty years.

Meanwhile, homicides in certain cities increased by far worse rates. Year-over-year increases of 30 percent or more were common in 2020, and this wasn’t limited to only large cities.

In data posted by researcher Jeff Asher, total year-over-year homicides through September 2020 were up in a wide range of locations: up 55 percent in Chicago, up 54 percent in Boston, up 38 percent in Denver, and up 105 percent in Omaha.

**What Caused the Surge?**

It’s much easier to count homicides than to determine the events and phenomena driving trends in homicides. It’s never a good idea to attribute changes in homicide totals to any single cause.

Nonetheless, we can hazard some guesses.

If we’re going to ask ourselves what might have caused such an unusually large rise in homicide, we ought to look for unusual events.

Most obvious among these, of course, are the stay-at-home orders, business closures, and lockdowns that have occurred since March of last year. These are pretty unusual things.

Although it is considered somewhat heretical to point out that lockdowns can produce negative societal side effects, the connection to violent behavior is so undeniable that this is now openly admitted.

For example, in a recent interview with The Atlantic, sociologist Patrick Sharkey discusses some of the likely causes of 2020’s surge in violence, stating:

Last year, everyday patterns of life broke down. Schools shut down. Young people were on their own. There was a widespread sense of a crisis and a surge in gun ownership. People stopped making their way to institutions that they know and where they spend their time. That type of destabilization is what creates the conditions for violence to emerge.

When asked if “idle time” caused by lockdowns was somehow connected to rising homicides, Sharkey continued:

It’s not just idle time but disconnection. That might be the better way to talk about it. People lost connections to institutions of community life, which include school, summer jobs programs, pools, and libraries. Those are the institutions that create connections between members of communities, especially for young people. When individuals are not connected to those institutions, then they’re out in public spaces, often without adults present. And while that dynamic doesn’t always lead to a rise in violence, it can.

The connection between a lack of community institutions and social dysfunction is well known by sociologists.1

Last year, when looking at the role the stay-at-home orders might have had on the summer’s riots, I wrote:

As much as lockdown advocates may wish that human beings could be reduced to creatures that do nothing more than work all day and watch television all night, the fact is that no society can long endure such conditions.

Human beings need what are known as "third places." …

As described by a Brookings Institution report, these third places include churches, parks, recreation centers, hairdressers' shops, gyms, and even fast-food restaurants.

Yet, the lockdown advocates, in a matter of a few days, cut people off from their third places and insisted, in many cases, that this would be the "new normal" for a year or more.

These third places cannot simply be shut down—and the public told to just forget about them indefinitely—without creating the potential for violence and other antisocial behavior.2

Few of these places exist for the explicit purpose of reducing violence, although they tend to have this effect. But during the government-mandated lockdowns, some organizations specifically devoted to violence prevention were shut down and, as noted by law professor Tracey Meares, the pandemic has prevented many antiviolence programs from operating. These programs, however, require "a great deal of a face-to-face contact, typically, among service providers and the folks who are most likely to both commit these offenses and be the victims of them," Meares says. "And it's a lot harder to do that when people can't meet in person."

Of course, it’s not that these people just can’t meet in person, as if it were physically impossible to do so. It’s that in many places they are legally prohibited from doing so. This means even the most urgent cases were neglected and put on the back burner because policymakers made a decision to ignore the realities of violent crime in order to obsess over covid risks.

And this is a point that must be made repeatedly. “The pandemic” isn’t what caused the widespread destruction of social institutions that are key in increasing social cohesion and preventing violence. Government edicts did this. Certainly, given fears over covid infection, it stands to reason that at least some people would have elected to stay home, and that important social institutions would have functioned at reduced capacity even without government mandates. However, what government mandates did was prevent people from even using their own discretion, which means even the most at-risk, isolated, and emotionally volatile people—the people who need these institutions the most—were cut off from important resources.

Also important in understanding homicides is the fact covid lockdowns have increased domestic violence; as Sharkey notes, “Intimate-partner violence increased in 2020.”Again, advocates for stay-at-home orders have used their bizarrely extreme preoccupation with covid deaths as an excuse to insist it is "worth it" to keep women and children locked up with their abusers. Homicides have increased as a result in many cases.

*The Role of Police in Lockdown Enforcement*

The lockdowns aren’t the only factors behind rising crime, of course. Another factor in the rising homicide rate is likely the decline of the public’s trust in police institutions.

The reputations of police and police organizations appear to have gone into significant decline in recent years as police encounters are increasingly being recorded and made public—thus exposing police abuse and what at least appears to be police abuse.

These events have been connected to rising rates of violent crime.3 As noted by both Sharkey and by crime historian Randolph Roth, the public’s trust in government institutions—which certainly includes police—can impact a community’s willingness to turn to violence in personal interactions.

In other words, antipolice sentiment is regarded as a likely indirect cause of growing homicide rates. This declining trust manifested itself in last summer’s riots, but the origins of the riots predate both the riots and the George Floyd case.

But even when we look to the role of police agencies’ status within communities, we find that the stay-at-home orders and lockdowns again play a role.

It is the police, after all, who have been responsible for enforcing government orders to wear masks, close businesses, and avoid gatherings. Throughout 2020, police have been a central in harassing churchgoers, beating up nonviolent citizens for not “social distancing,” and arresting women for not wearing masks. Police have also arrested business owners and shut down their businesses. And then there was the case of a six-year-old girl who was taken from her mother because the mother wasn’t wearing a mask when she dropped her daughter off at school. Who will be providing the regime’s muscle when it comes to separating this child from her mother? Naturally, it will be the police.

Although the police have continued to enjoy uncritical support from the “Back the Blue” movement, more reasonable people can only tolerate so much when it comes to police who willingly attack and arrest people for the noncrimes of using their own private property or not wearing a mask on a public sidewalk.

*Reversing the Damage Done in 2020*

It’s unclear at this point if reversing policies that caused a year of community destruction can quickly undo the damage. In any case, however, the responsible thing to do is end any and all policies that keep churches, community centers, and meeting spaces closed. The police must be out of the business of roughing people up in the name of social distancing. The politicians’ obsession with isolating people must end.

Afghan officials: 3 women working in polio drive killed

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) — Attackers on Tuesday gunned down three women working to administer the anti-polio vaccine in eastern Afghanistan, officials said, a day after authorities launched a new campaign against the crippling children's disease.

The women were killed in two separate attacks in Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar province. Fared Khan, spokesman for Nangarhar police, said two were shot and killed in police District 7 and the third was killed in District 4.

According to an official from the governor’s office, local media were reporting that no arrest have been made so far in the case. The official, who was not authorized to talk to the media, spoke on condition of anonymity.

No one immediately claimed responsibility for the attack but eastern Afghanistan has witnessed an increase of attacks by the Islamic State group. IS militants have declared war on Shiites and frequently target the country's minority Hazaras.

The government on Monday launched another round of polio vaccinations across the country, aiming to inoculate 9.6 million children under 5 years of age. The polio drive came after 54 new cases of polio were reported in 2020, the highest number on record since the fall of the Taliban in 2001.

According to the United Nations, Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan are the only two countries in the world where polio is still endemic, after Nigeria was last year declared free of the wild poliovirus. With an increase in the number of polio cases during the last three years, the battle to eradicate the crippling children's disease has become a pivoting challenge for Afghanistan.

Most of the vaccination campaigns across the country are conducted by female health workers, who can gain better access to households and mothers and children in a...

Boulder-Based Craft Brewer Claims Three Honors At New York International Beer Competition

BOULDER, CO, March 30, 2021 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Sanitas Brewing Company, a mainstay on the competitive Colorado craft beer scene for more than half a decade, announced today that it has been named  Colorado Ale Brewery of the Year in the 10th Annual New York International Beer Competition, and that the brewery’s acclaimed Passion Fruit Sour and Black IPA beers also claimed prizes in the annual competition.

This year’s NYIBC  featured more than 800 entries from over 14 countries competing in nearly 40 categories, and the top beer buyers and trade professionals in the country served as judges in the competition. This marked the first time Sanitas Brewing Company entered the competition and it was rewarded not only with the prized Colorado Ale Brewery of the Year honor, but also with a silver medal for its Passion Fruit Sour and a bronze medal for its Black IPA.

Founded in 2013, the Sanitas Brewing Company currently offers four year-round beers and more than 25 unique beers throughout the year, all available in their taproom and patio, located in the shadow of the iconic Boulder Flatirons and Mount Sanitas, for which the brewery is named.

“The New York International Beer Competition is one of the most legitimate competitions in the beer world, so to get two of our best selling beers to win awards and to be named Colorado Ale Brewery of the Year was awesome,” said Sanitas Brewing Company co-founder Michael Memsic. “It’s exciting that our beer is becoming more recognized, because it signifies to us that the changes and improvements we’ve made to our products are paying off.”

The NYIBC awards highlight an optimistic spring season for the Sanitas Brewing Company, following a silver medal at the Great American Beer Fest in the fall which continues to thrive in Boulder’s competitive craft brewery scene, despite challenges from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Last year the Sanitas Brewing Company opened an expanded new patio space covering roughly 8,000 square feet that includes an outdoor bar with four taps of Sanitas microbrews, making it the largest outdoor seating space for any brewery in the City of Boulder. Sanitas has since added additional seating, lighting and shade to accommodate more guests this spring and summer and to help alleviate concerns about social distancing during the pandemic.

In addition,  Sanitas Brewing Company is on pace to have every staff member completely vaccinated against COVID-19 by May 1, and the brewery will continue to abide by all CDC guidelines throughout the pandemic to help limit the spread of the virus.

“I am extremely optimistic about the spring and summer and 2021 as a whole, and I can’t wait,” Memsic said. “I think our patio is going to explode this summer because of the improvements we’ve made, and we’re doing even more this year to make it the best patio in Boulder. We have a killer staff, great seating and a really cool environment overall.”

Wall Street heads for lower open as Archegos fallout and yields pressure stocks

The main indices on Wall Street are headed for a softer open on Tuesday as the Archegos Capital hedge fund liquidation continues to make waves alongside rising bond yields. The Dow Jones Industrial Average is tipped to shed 47 points at 33,124 while the S&P 500 is expected to retreat 14 points to 3,957. The tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 is seen tumbling 103 points to 12,863. “Rising yields are once again set to drive market direction, with the growth stocks’ valuations being called into question. Rotation into value looks set to be the trade of the day,” suggested OANDA’s Sophie Griffiths. Swissquote’s Ipek Ozkardeskaya said the Archegos story continues to dominate the headlines, “as investors question whether the fall of the secretive hedge fund and its financial implications are done and dusted, or is it just the tip of the iceberg, that there are more players out there that have super leveraged positions, that could also go wrong and result in a similar fallout”. “If we start putting the pieces of the puzzle together, the GameStop saga and the short-squeeze frenzy, the Archegos capital fall, abnormal price rallies in cryptocurrencies and other obscure assets, there is a lesson to be taken. There is too much liquidity in the system, and separate occurrences are a clear sign that the financial markets are fuming, even though there is not an immediate systemic risk to the financial system right now,” Ozkardeskaya said. Talking of GameStop Corp (NYSE:GME), the video games retailer has appointed Elliott Wilke as its chief growth officer. Wilke previously held a number of positions at online retail giant Amazon Inc 9NASDAQ:AMZN). "At GameStop, Mr. Wilke will oversee growth strategies and marketing, with a focus on increasing customer loyalty and growing the reach of Power Up Rewards and Game Informer," the company’s announcement said. As far as economic data are concerned, the focus in the US today is likely to be the Conference Board’s consumer survey for March, according to Daiwa Capital Markets. “Daiwa America chief economist Mike Moran expects that the disbursement of another round of rebate checks and the expansion of supplemental unemployment benefits probably brightened consumers’ collective mood in March. That said, the expected reading of 96.0 – a lift of 4.7pts – is not especially impressive, as it trails other observations in the current cycle (e.g. 101.4 in October) and is far below the pre-pandemic high of 132.6 in February 2020,” Daiwa said. Three things to watch for on Tuesday: The earnings diary for Tuesday will see numbers from athletic apparel firm Lululemon Athletica Inc (NASDAQ:LULU) as well as pet food seller Chewy Inc (NYSE:CHWY) and the maker of Cholula Hot Sauce McCormick & Co (NYSE:MKC) Also of interest will be PayPal Holdings Inc (NASDAQ:PYPL) after the firm rolled out a cryptocurrency checkout feature to its US customers On the macro front, US house price index data could be of interest alongside speeches from a number of the Fed’s representatives

Movability Partners With Fetii To Offer Post-COVID Commuting Solutions

Movability Partners With Fetii To Offer Post-COVID Commuting Solutions *AUSTIN, TX / ACCESSWIRE / March 30, 2021 /* Movability and Fetii are teaming up to offer Texans a commuting solution in a post-COVID world.

The duo are offering commuters and employers unique solutions through a shared vision of improving efficiency and alleviating traffic congestion. Focusing on decreased traffic congestion, individuals can save time, money and gas, and employers can see their company's profitability and workflow increase.

"Movability is excited to welcome Fetii to our family as it will take the public and private sectors, along with many different modes, to get our community where they need to go," said Movability Executive Director Lisa Kay Pfannenstiel.

Movability, Central Texas' first and only transportation management association, works in conjunction with employers and individuals to improve the area using commuter options that save money and time.* *Movability works with many well-known names, including Google, Facebook, Samsung, Whole Foods, Silicon Labs, Dell, St. Edward's University, etc.

Matthew Iommi, Fetii co-founder and co-chief executive officer, said, "Right now in the U.S., over 75% of commuters choose to drive to work alone in their car. This translates into nearly 115 million vehicles transporting exactly one person each, a statistic increasing as the workforce continues to grow. As cities deal with a growing population, rising emissions and increasing congestion, one thing is certain, the future of transportation is shared mobility."

Austin ranks as the nation's 18^th worst in traffic congestion. To improve the traffic situation, Movability will use Fetii's network of 15 passenger transit vans and their group-centric AI platform for a solution.

While businesses have previously attempted different commuting options, most were unsustainable. An in-house shuttle service operation leads to high overhead costs due to vehicle purchases and depreciation, insurance, gas, driver payroll and manager payroll. Traditional commuting services charge exorbitantly high fees that make it nearly impossible for businesses to afford multiple commuting vehicles.

The group rideshare company offers a unique solution to the transportation dilemma of both employers and employees. Fetii's dual revenue system - Fetii Business and Fetii Group - will charge businesses nearly 80% less than current commuting transit providers that offer employee shuttle services. It's a revolutionary step forward in the transportation industry that gives businesses the ability to afford a fleet of employee commuting vehicles.

Justin Rath, Fetii co-founder and co-CEO, said, "During the times of the day when businesses aren't utilizing Fetii for their employee transportation, our transit vehicles are not sitting in a parking lot in the evening/nights. Instead, they are generating revenue by transporting groups using the Fetii platform."

In this post-COVID world, employers take precautions when bringing employees back to the office. Besides rigorous cleanings and safety precautions, Fetii utilizes a QR vehicle check-in process that gives businesses the ability to contract trace to prevent any virus outbreaks among employees. The group rideshare company helped to ensure a successful reopening of the Texas A&M University System in the Fall 2020 semester.

A&M System Chief Information Officer Mark Stone said, "The Texas A&M University System signed a system-wide agreement with Fetii to allow all 11 institutions and the other nine members of the system to utilize Fetii for their reopening processes. We could not be more pleased."

COVID-19 changed how people worked, and now Movability and Fetii are changing how employees get to and from their jobs. It may have been inevitable that a partnership between the TMA and rideshare company would happen as they share the same vision for a better world.

*About Fetii*

"Fetii has created an AI group-centric platform and a network of 15 passenger vehicles that can service groups on-demand as well as provide a cost-effective commuting solution to businesses and their employees. With Fetii's technology and transit network, Fetii can remove up to 14 vehicles with each trip, bringing a genuine and effective solution to cities," said Matthew Iommi, Fetii co-founder and co-CEO.

*About Movability*

"Movability is Central Texas' sole transportation management association (TMA). Movability aims to promote and connect employers and individuals in Central Texas with TDM strategies and planning, ultimately reducing the number of single-occupancy vehicles and trips commuters and travelers make in the region.

Kate Harrington, Movability Membership Outreach & Engagement manager, said, "We hope to achieve this on a grander scale eventually. We want to provide TMA services for large, mixed-use developments and dense hubs in Central Texas while also working with service providers to connect employers and commuters directly."
